Spring Orientation

1. CREATE your VT Username (PID)

3. DOWNLOAD the DUO Mobile App on your personal smartphone and enroll the device

4. ADD your VT email to your personal smartphone

5. ACCESS and READ your VT GMail daily

6. DOWNLOAD Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer for FREE! You will need this software when completing the College of Science Orientation Worksheet and other forms at the university. Complete this before attempting the remainder of this checklist.

1. RECEIVE College of Science Welcome email in your VT email.

2. ACCEPT invitation to join the College of Science Canvas page for VAACR.

3. COMPLETE College of Science Virtual Academic Advising and Course Registration Canvas Page.  

4. COMPLETE the Expected Credits Worksheet and upload the form to the Pre-Advising Intake Form before your advising meeting.

5. TAKE the ALEKS Placement Assessment for MATH 1225.



The Department of Economics prefers students majoring in Economics complete MATH 1225 and MATH 1226, Calculus of a Single Variable. Placement in MATH 1225 requires the completion of the ALEKS Placement Assessment with a score of 80 or higher. It is recommended that you complete the ALEKS Placement Assessment as soon as possiblefor the best chance of seats being available in MATH 1225.

Students that do not achieve an 80 or higher on the ALEKS Placement Assessment will complete MATH 1214, Prepare for Calculus, before attempting MATH 1225 in a future semester.

1. RECEIVE Department of Economics Advising email in your VT email on December 8 with information on course registration and scheduling an academic advising meeting. If you do not receive an email from Ms. Nicole Ebreo (nicole47@vt.edu) or Navigate you will need to email Ms. Ebreo (nicole47@vt.edu) as soon as possible 

2. PREPARE for Class Registration 


Go to Hokie Spa
Click on the HokieSPA tab
Click on Registration (Add/Drop) and Schedule
When accessing Add/Drop for the first time in a term, click Prepare for Registration
Complete the required tasks
Click Registration at the top of the screen to return to the Registration men

3. REGISTER for classes 
Go to Hokie Spa
Click on the HokieSPA tab
Click on Regitration (Add/Drop) and Schedule
Select the Fall term for which you are planning to register for classes

4. UPDATE schedule by the first day of class
Once AP, IB, CLEP, and Transfer credits from 2-year or 4-year institutions have been processed and appear on your unofficial transcript in Hokie Spa, you may make the following changes to your cart if credit is received for the following.


  • ECON 2005 - Drop ECON 2005, ECON 2006 will be completed in Spring
  • ECON 2006 - Add ECON 2005
  • ECON 2005 and 2006 - Meet with advisor to discuss options
  • MATH 1225 - Drop MATH 1214, Add MATH 1226
  • 80 or higher on ALEKS Placement - Drop MATH 1214, Add MATH 1225
  • ENGL 1105 - Drop ENGL 1105, Add ENGL 1106
  • ENGL 1106 - Drop ENGL 1105, Add a course of your choice for Pathway Concept 1 Advanced

5. SCHEDULE your virtal academic advising and course registration appointment with the Department Advsior, Nicole Ebreo, using the link provided in the email she sent you via Navigate in December.

1. COMPLETE University New Student Orientation modules 

2. COMPLETE the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if you wish to apply for financial aid

3. SUBMIT the immunization history form

4. COMPLETE the AlcoholEdu, Sexual Assault Prevention, and Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging online education modules

1. SEND your official high school transcript to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions once you have received your final grades.

2. SUBMIT your Advanced Placment (AP), Cambridge International Exam, College Level Examiniation Program (CLEP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) scores to Virginia Tech (#5859). Scores should be reported electronically from the College Board or International Baccalaureate.

3. SUBMIT your official transcripts from two-year and 4-year institutions previously attended. This includes 2-year or 4-institutions attended as part of a Dual-Enrollment program. Refer to the Transfer Guides to determine courses at Virginia Tech that are equivalent to courses completed elsewhere.  

4. VERIFY receipt of AP, IB, CLEP, Cambridge, and transfer credits in Hokie Spa. This needs to be regularly reviewed until all incoming credits are processed.
