Credit by Exam
Registration for Fall 2026 Economics Credit-by-Exam is open November 1 through November 30, 2026.
The Economics Department offers credit-by-exam for ECON 2005 (Microeconomics) and ECON 2006 (Macroeconomics) at the end of the fall and spring semesters. The registration deadline is 3:00 PM on the last day of the regular semester (the day before Reading Day).
Make-up exams will not be given for any reason.
HOW IT WORKS
Credit-by-Exam (CBE) allows current Virginia Tech students to earn credit for ECON 2005 or ECON 2006 by passing a proctored, in-person exam. These exams are not offered online.
- Registration: You must complete the Registrar's credit-by-exam form and have it signed by the Director of Undergraduate Studies before submitting it to the Registrar's Office.
- Fee: $10 per credit hour, charged to your student account through the Bursar's Office. Each course is 3 credits, so the total cost is $30 per exam.
- Passing score: 70% or better. Results will be provided within 48 hours of the exam.
- What to bring: Your Virginia Tech student ID and a printed copy of your registration confirmation email. You will not be permitted to take the exam without both.

COURSE INFORMATION
Introduction to microeconomics. The economic approach to decision-making. Model of supply and demand. Elasticities. Consumer behavior. Firm behavior under varying industry structures. Sources and consequences of market failure. Costs and benefits of international trade. The role of government in the economy. Economic, ethical, and social ramifications of issues such as pollution, missing information, and income inequality.
Introduction to macroeconomics. The measurement of economic activity. Macroeconomic problems (such as unemployment and inflation). The monetary system. Effects and limitations of monetary and fiscal policies. International economics. Social and ethical issues related to macroeconomic policy.
IMPORTANT RULES
Before registering, be aware of the following university policies:
- You cannot receive credit by exam for a course you have previously audited or enrolled in at Virginia Tech.
- University rules prohibit more than one attempt at Credit-by-Exam for any course, and a student's total credit earned through CBE cannot exceed 12 credit hours.
- Violations of these policies will be referred to the honor system.
