Department
Graduating students will be emailed with a link to the department graduation registration survey in late March.
SPRING COMMENCEMENT
Students should complete the Application for Degree process in Hokie Spa by the Spring of their Junior year. Students graduating in Spring must complete the Application for Degree process in Hokie Spa by February 1 of the year in which they are graduating to participate in Spring Commencement. Students who decide to graduate in Spring after April 1 should email cosadvising@vt.edu for permission to participate in Spring Commencement.
DEPARTMENT RECOGNITION RECEPTION
The Department of Economics hosts a recognition reception for students graduating in Spring with a degree in Economics. Students must RSVP to event. Event and RSVP information will be sent to students in April.
The university has a single graduation ceremony for Fall Graduates. There are no ceremonies for Summer or Winter. Summer, Fall, and Winter graduates will also receive the department graduation survey and an invitation to the Department Recognition Reception for the appropriate Spring.
SUMMER GRADUATES
Students graduating in Summer may participate in the Spring Commencement ceremony prior to the summer in which they graduate. Students will need to email the College of Science Dean's Office at cosadvising@vt.edu for permission to participate in Spring Commencement.
FALL GRADUATES
Students graduating in Fall participate in the Fall ceremony held in December at the end of the Fall semester. Fall Graduates may participate in the Spring Commencement cermeony following the Fall in which they graduate with permission. Fall Graduates need to email cosadvising@vt.edu during the Spring semester to request permission.
WINTER GRADUATES
Students graduating in Winter may participate in the Spring Commencement ceremony with permission from the College of Science Dean's Office. Students will need to email cosadvising@vt.edu for permission to participate in the Spring Ceremony by April 1.
The Department will notify students that are eligible to apply for the scholarship via email in April of each year.
Criteria for the scholarship
1. Economics must be student's primary major
2. ECON 3104 must be completed with at least a B+
3. ECON 3204 must either be completed with at least a B+ or In-Progress
4. Must have an In-Major GPA of at least 3.500
5. Must have an Overall GPA of at least 3.500

College
Forms must be opened from the College of Science website, completed in the fillable pdf format and then uploaded to Submit Form.
A student may take courses at other institutions during any semester or term in which they are in Good Standing at Virginia Tech. However, the student must complete the Authorization to Take Courses Elsewhere form in the semester prior to taking the course elsewhere.
The approval process can take several weeks so the form should be submitted 4-6 weeks prior to the start of the term in which the course/courses will be taken.
The student will need to have the other institution send an official transcript to the Virginia Tech Registrar’s Office for processing once the course/courses is complete.
To drop Economics as a second major, third major, or minor students are required to complete the College's Change of Major form.
To add Economics as a primary major, second major,third major, or minor students must meet with the Department's Undergraduate Advisor prior to completing a request to add major. Schedule an appointment with the Advisor for appointment.
A student can withdraw from a course after the Drop deadline has passed by using a course withdrawal. A student is allowed 3 course withdrawals during their academic career. The course will remain on the student’s academic transcript with a “grade” of W.
A student that has three Final Exams in a 24-Hour period can submit a request to the faculty of at least one of the courses to change the time at which they will take the Final Exam for that course.
Students are limited to 19 credit hours per semester. However, a student can take more than 19 credit hours in a single semester by completing an Overhours form. The form requires the student to list all courses they intend to take during the term in which they are requesting an Overhours waiver. The form will need to be submitted to the College’s Dean’s Office before the last day to add courses.
Limited to 12 Hours and no more than 6 hours in any one term.
Courses that are not being used to complete Curriculum for Liberal Education (CLE), Pathways, College, or Major requirements (Free Electives) can be taken Pass/Fail instead for a grade of A-F.
Independent Study (ECON 2974 or 4974) is an option for students that want to work with faculty in the department that are currently conducting research. The student will assist the faculty member with their research.
Undergraduate Research (ECON 2994 or 4994) is an option for students that have previously developed their own focus of research. The student completing Undergraduate Research must find a faculty member in the Economics Department who is willing to sponsor their research. The student will have to submit a research proposal as part of their request to add the course.
To add either an Independent Study or Undergraduate Research a student must complete the Undergraduate Research/Independent Study form for their college.
University
Students wishing to drop all classes from a term after 5pm on the first day of class of a term.
Dean's signature is required on the form.
For electronic copies to be accepted an original signature must be included, form must be sent from VT email, and include your personal FERPA passcode which you create in Hokie Spa.

Official transcripts are ordered on Hokie Spa.
Instructions
1. Log into Hokie Spa
2. Click Transcripts and Certificataions Menu
3. Click Order Official Transcripts
4. Click Submit Transcript Request
5. Enter your information.
6. Click "Additional Address to Send Transcripts to?" if you want a transcript sent to someone other than yourself.
7. Click "Do you have attachements?" if appropriate. Note, transcripts will not be sent until the Registrar's Office receives your attachments and FERPA Self Code.
8. Follow each prompt to place order.
