VAACR Orientation 2024
The Department of Economics is excited to welcome our newest Hokies! Virtual Academic Advising and Course Registration is designed to support you as you transition to college and is required for all new students. This experience is in addition to the Office of New Students and Family Programs University Orientation. An outline of the process is below.
Virtual Academic Advising and Course Registration CHECKLIST
1. CREATE your VT Username (PID)
2. ENROLL in the 2-Factor Authentication with Duo
3. DOWNLOAD the DUO Mobile App on your personal smartphone and enroll the device
4. ADD your VT email to your personal smartphone
5. DOWNLOAD Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer for FREE! You will need this software when completing forms

6.DOWNLOAD Zoom for advising appointments

1. RECEIVE College of Science Welcome email in your VT email on May 6.
2. COMPLETE the Expected Courses and Credits Worksheet by June 12.

4. TAKE the ALEKS Placement Assessment for MATH 1225 by July 31.
The Department of Economics prefers students majoring in Economics complete MATH 1225 and MATH 1226, Calculus of a Single Variable. Placement in MATH 1225 requires the completion of the ALEKS Placement Assessment with a score of 80 or higher. It is recommended that you complete the ALEKS Placement Assessment by June 12 for the best chance of seats being available in MATH 1225.

Students that do not achieve an 80 or higher on the ALEKS Placement Assessment will complete MATH 1214, Prepare for Calculus, before attempting MATH 1225 in a future semester.
1. RECEIVE Department of Economics Advising email in your VT email on May 20 with information on course registration and mandatory academic advising meeting.
2. PREPARE for Class Registration

Select Term - Select Fall 2024 and click Save and Continue
Select Campus - Select Blacksburg and click Save and Continue
Click on Open Action Items to update: Emergency Contact Address, Emergency Contact Confirmed, FERPA Release, VT Alerts, Self-Disclosure of Arrest/Conviction, and Student Financial Responsibility
3. REGISTER for classes beginning June 12

Select Term - Select Fall 2024 and click Save and Continue
Select Campus - Select Blacksburg and click Save and Continue
Courses in Cart - The Department of Economics requires incoming students to complete specific courses in their first term. The courses in your cart are the courses required to be completed in your first term as an Economics major. The Preregistered Course Information Guide will explain why these coures are in your cart.
4. MAKE changes to schedule by July 31
AS A MAJOR YOU, MUST HAVE ECON 2005 (CRN 84470) AND ECON 1004 (CRN 90778) ON YOUR SELECTED SCHEDULE. You may select any section of ENGL 1105 and MATH 1214 or MATH 1225. Select two courses of your choice that can be used for Pathway Concept 2, 3, 4, 6 Art, or 6 Design.
Note - If you receive AP credit for ECON 2005 you will need to add an additional course of your choice for Pathway Concept 2, 3, 4, 6 Art, or 6 Design in place of ECON 2005. Economics majors complete ECON 2006 in the Spring of their first year as part of the cohort.
Note - Many AP, IB, and TR credits apply to Pathway to General Education requirements. Refer to the completed Expected Courses and Credit Worksheet you completed in Step 2, College of Science Action Items, to determine which Pathway requirements you already have credit for and which Pathway requirement for which you may select a course.

5. COMPLETE your schedule by July 31
Select the schedule of your choice from those generated in Hokie Spa and click REGISTER in the top right corner to officially register for classes.
Note - classes in cart are not actually on your schedule until you click REGISTER.
6. UPDATE schedule by August 25
Once AP, IB, CLEP, and Transfer credits from 2-year or 4-year institutions have been processed and appear on your unofficial transcript in Hokie Spa, you may make the following changes to your cart if credit is received for the following.
ECON 2005 - Drop ECON 2005, ECON 2006 will be completed in Spring
- ECON 2006 - Add ECON 2005
- ECON 2005 and 2006 - Meet with advisor to discuss options
- MATH 1225 - Drop MATH 1214, Add MATH 1226
- 80 or higher on ALEKS Placement - Drop MATH 1214, Add MATH 1225
- ENGL 1105 - Drop ENGL 1105, Add ENGL 1106
- ENGL 1106 - Drop ENGL 1105, Add a course of your choice for Pathway Concept 1 Advanced
1. RECEIVE Department of Economics Advising email in your VT email on May 20 with information on course registration and registering for a MANDATORY Virtual Academic Advising Overview Session.
2. COMPLETE the Economics Student Assessment form
You need to be logged into your Virginia Tech google account to complete the form before the date of your Mandatory Virtual Academic Advising Overview Session.

3. ATTEND Mandatory Virtual Academic Advising Overview Session
Students will attend one session of their choice on June 18, 25, July 2, 16, or 23 virtually via Zoom. Topics covered during the meeting will inlcude options in the major, completing course registration, scheduleing resources, making changes to your schedule, and a Q&A. Each meeting will last approximately 90 minutes, but may continue longer depending on the questions
NOTE-Students should begin registering for classes before attending this session. Course registration opens June 12.
We encourage students to attend this meeting individually without others or members of your support team so that the academic advisor and students can connect with each other. There will be sessions specifically for families/partners/support teams of students from the Academic Advising Initiatives Office.
1. SCHEDULE an OPTIONAL Virtual Academic Advising Appointment
This is an optional appointment students can schedule with the advisor during the Virtual Academic Advising and Course Registration period. Once a student attends the Mandatory Virtual Academic Advising Overview Meeting the student will receive an email with the link to use to schedule an option Virtual Academic Advising Appointment.
2. PREPARE for the OPTIONAL Virtual Academic Advising Appointment
Students that schedule an optional appointment need to make sure they have the following.
At least 48 hours before appointment - Schedule has completed Course Registration using Hokie Scheduler, Department of Economics Assessment form has been submitted, and College of Science Expected Credits/Courses Worksheet has been uploaded.- Within 24 hours before appointment - Check VT email for the confirmation from Navigate which will include the Zoom link for the appointment.
- Before appointment begins - Have ID number ready. (ex. 906121234), be prepared to take notes during the appointment.
3. COMPLETE the OPTIONAL Virtual Academic Advising Appointment
During the 20 minute meeting via Zoom the advisor will review with the student their schedule, suggest changes based on transferred credit and future plans of the student, and answer questions.
Once again, students are encouraged to attend this appointment individually without others or members of your support team so our academic advisors and students can connect with each other. There will be sessions specifically for families/partners/support teams of students from the Academic Advising Initiatives Office.

2. COMPLETE the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if you wish to apply for financial aid

1. SEND your official high school transcript to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions once you have received your final grades.

2. SUBMIT your Advanced Placment (AP), Cambridge International Exam, College Level Examiniation Program (CLEP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) scores to Virginia Tech (#5859). Scores should be reported electronically from the College Board or International Baccalaureate.
3. SUBMIT your official transcripts from two-year and 4-year institutions previously attended. This includes 2-year or 4-institutions attended as part of a Dual-Enrollment program. Refer to the Transfer Guides to determine courses at Virginia Tech that are equivalent to courses completed elsewhere.
4. VERIFY receipt of AP, IB, CLEP, Cambridge, and transfer credits in Hokie Spa. This needs to be regularly reviewed until all incoming credits are processed.
