ECON 3954: Economics of Tourism
3-credit course
This course counts as an Economics elective for General Economics majors, the Economics Business option, and Economics minors. It counts as a free elective for Economics MEDS and Economics Policy options.
This faculty-led study abroad program is a unique three-week experience during the summer semester, running from mid-May to mid-June. It is designed for students who are eager to explore decision-making in tourism economics while immersing themselves in diverse cultures through visits to local businesses, organizations, and cultural sites.
The program aims to familiarize students with fundamental economic concepts relevant to tourism and decision-making. Students will delve into the factors influencing consumer demand for leisure travel, competition dynamics among tourism service providers, and the economic impacts of tourism development on communities and economies. Additionally, students will gain insights into the rold of government in the tourism industry, including how taxation, subsides, and regulations can significantly affect this sector.
Throughout the course, students will:
- Explore the factors shapng consumer demand for leisure travel and the competition dynamics among tourism service providers.
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of how government policies influence the tourism industry.
- Assess and analyze the environmental impacts of tourism within the host country.
- Formulate policies and regulations that foster sustainable tourism practices.
- Immerse themselves in the rich culturre and history of the host country through engaging on-site visits.
This program is particularly special as it accommodates only 15 students, ensuring a close-knit environment where participants can actively engage with the culture and local communities. While the course is open to all majors, priority for acceptance will be given to economics majors, making it an inaluable extenstion of their academic journey.

- Learn how to promote tourism sustainability through economic policies while experiencing rich culture and history.
- Visit the European Parliment, WTO, UN, a hydroelectric power station, a Gruyere cheese factory, CERN, the Swiss and French Alps, a Gaudi mosaic art workshop, a culinary class, and much more!
Costs
Program fee is $6,300 which includes all lodging, ground transportation, workshops, on-site company and museum visits, and some meals. Excludes airfares and tuition.
