Welcome to the Department of Economics 2021 Orientation!

The Department of Economics is excited to welcome our newest Hokies! Orientation is one of the most important parts of your transitition to college. This is where you will learn about life as a Hokie, obtain very important information for your success, and meet with your academic advisor to enroll in classes for the fall semester.

ORIENTATION CHECKLIST

1. CREATE your VT Username (PID)

3. DOWNLOAD the DUO Mobile App on your personal smartphone and enroll the device Download App

4. ADD your VT email to your personal smartphone

5. ACCESS and READ your VT GMail daily

6. DOWNLOAD Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer for FREE! You will need this software when completing the College of Science Orientation Worksheet and other forms at the university. Complete this before attempting the remainder of this checklist.

1. COMPLETE the Economics Orientation Form
Deadline June 11

3. PREPARE for Class Registration
Complete at least 1 day before scheduled advising appointment

  • Update: Emergency Contact Address, Emergency Contact Confirmed, FERPA Release, VT Alerts, Self-Disclosure of Arrest/Conviction, and Student Financial Responsibility

4. CHECK your Pathways to General Education progress
Complete at least 3 days before scheduled advising appointment

5. SCHEDULE one-on-one advising appointment with Department Advisor
One hour appointments available June 14-July 23.

Appointments are virtual via Zoom.

Your advisor is Erika Perdue, the Undergraduate Advisor for the Department of Economics. When you attend your virtual advising session, your advisor will work with you to finalize your schedule which will be started based on the information submitted on your Orientation form and answer any questions you may have about registration, degree requirements, and life at Virginia Tech.

6. COMPLETE MATH 1225 Placement Assessment
Complete before July 31
MATH 1225-1226, Calculus of a Single Variable, is the MATH sequence preferred for Economics majors to provide the strongest foundation in Math for upcoming courses in the major.
To take MATH 1225-1226 students need to either receive AP Calculus Exam scores high enough to be automatically placed in MATH 1225 or complete the MATH 1225 Placement Assessment.

1. SIGN UP for Orientation
You will receive an email invitation with a link to register for New Student Orientation

2. COMPLETE the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if you wish to apply for financial aid

3. COMPLETE and SUBMIT the immunization history form

4. COMPLETE Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) authorization
FERPA requires you to authorize the university prior to release of any academic record information to a third party. Creation of a FERPA passcode in Hokie Spa allows you to approve disclosure of your academic record information. We encourage you to create a FERPA passcode for Self as well as your parents(s) and/or guardian(s).

  • Answer the question regarding tax dependency
  • Enter an 8-character alphanumeric passcode
  • Click the Add/Delete Record button

 

1. SEND your official high school transcript to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions once you have final grades

2. SEND all AP, IB, CLEP, and Cambridge scores to Virginia Tech's Office of the University Registrar

If you took exams in multiple years, request that your entire score report be sent.

3. LOOKUP how courses may transfer to Virginia Tech
AP, IB, CLEP, Cambridge scores:

4. VERIFY receipt of AP, IB, CLEP, Cambridge, and transfer credits on Hokie Spa
This needs to be regularly reviewed until all incoming credits are processed.
